North America is a dynamic and growing market that is very important for Marel. It is served by 600 Marel employees from four different locations in the U.S., two of which are also manufacturing sites. In the first half of 2016, Marel streamlined its operations in Seattle and rationalized its product portfolio. Marel is now focusing its onboard business on innovative and standardized solutions instead of customized ad-hoc solutions.
In 2016, sales were good in North America across all product groups. Large projects were secured in poultry and meat during the year. Marel’s unified sales team in primary and secondary meat achieved its first full line project in meat in the second half of the year.
Marel has had a presence in South America for over 30 years reflecting the great importance of this market for Marel. The majority of Marel employees in South America are located in Brazil where Marel operates two sales and service offices and an assembly facility. Marel maintains offices across the continent, including Chile, Uruguay, Mexico and Columbia, to stay close to customers and provide local sales and service support.
Projects in South America during 2016 include a state-of-the-art pork plant for a leading Mexican pork producer in the Mexican State of Veracruz. The new plant will start operations in the autumn on 2017 and will have the latest automatic pork slaughtering technology, a system that will drive the industry forward.
Europe is Marel’s home market and where the majority of Marel´s employees are located. 34% of Marel´s 4,600 employees are located in the Netherlands and 23% in Iceland and Denmark. In Europe Marel operates a net of sales and service offices that are located around the continent. Manufacturing facilities are located in Iceland, Denmark, the Netherlands, the U.K. and in Slovakia.
Marel had a good year in Europe and sales were good in all product groups. Large projects in this part of the world in 2016 include a state-of-the-art salmon factory in Norway for Lerøy, a leading Norwegian producer. The partnership between Marel and Lerøy demonstrates yet again how innovation is created in collaboration with customers. This groundbreaking project will drive the salmon industry forward as the factory will be equipped with new salmon processing technology that is designed to set new benchmarks for the industry.
Asia is a dynamic growth market with immense potential for Marel. Asia is at the center point of prevailing trends that will shape and impact the food processing market in the future. Food demand in Asia will rise in the coming decades. It will be driven by an increase in urbanization and the growth of active consumers. Marel operates a net of sales and service offices in Asia and in Oceania in addition to a manufacturing facility in China.
2016 was a good year for Marel in Asia and sales were good across all product groups and geographies. The highlight of the year was a contract for a state-of-the-art poultry plant in South Korea, which will become one of the largest poultry processing facilities in Asia. The project is with the Harim Group, a leading provider of poultry and long term partner of Marel. The plant will utilize the latest processing technology that will advance the field of poultry processing.
Although Africa is still a small market for Marel it is a very important market with great future potential. In partnership with local poultry producers, Marel has commissioned small modern poultry plants that have fast-tracked poultry processing in the region and contributed to increased food security and quality. One of these projects is with Empas, a poltry processor in The Gambia. In partnership with Marel, Empas built a greenfield poultry processing plant that is the first professional poultry processing plant in the country.
